Universal Orlando’s Best Coaster - Revenge of the Mummy

In 2004, Universal Studios opened its first roller coaster. Revenge of the Mummy is based on the popular Mummy movie series, and is one of the most unique coasters ever invented. It took almost 25 years for Universal Studios to finally build a roller coaster, but when they finally decided to add one, they definately picked the right one. A traditional coaster would be way out of place with the park’s movie magic theme, so Universal went for a coaster based on the movies.

The ride incorporates elements of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, two hit movies starring Brendon Frasier. It’s an indoor coaster and a haunted house in one. The line area is designed to resemble a 1940’s archaeological dig site, and the ride itself continues this theme. You board individual mine cars to take you through the coaster.

Imhotep makes many appearances as the coaster goes forward and backward through the ride. It’s a fast, wild ride, with enough slow parts so you can appreciate the atmosphere. At one point, the coaster stops at a fake unload area, where the “ride attendant” is blown up before you take off again. This ride uses sight, sounds, and cold air and water very effectively. Part of the scare is the sections where the coaster stops for a frightening scene, and there you are trapped in your seat, not knowing if and when the coaster is going to take off again, and whether it’ll go backwards or forwards.

Brendon Frasier shows up at the end of the ride, where he’s handed a cup of coffee by none other than Imhotep.

The Mummy coaster replaces the Kongfrontation ride, which was closed in 2002. Look for a small golden King Kong statue in the treasure scene. It’s easy to spot if you’re not too busy screaming!

If the line is long, head for the single rider’s line. As this is a single seat coaster, there’s no reason to be on the same train with your friends.
